Holiest City

Makkah

The holiest city in Islam — home of the Kaaba, the destination of every Muslim's prayer, and the spiritual center of the Umrah and Hajj pilgrimage.

About Makkah

Makkah (Makkah Al-Mukarramah — "Makkah the Honored") is the holiest city in Islam and the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It is home to the Kaaba, the ancient stone building at the center of Masjid al-Haram, which was built by Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his son Prophet Ismail (Ishmael).

Every year, millions of Muslims from around the world travel to Makkah to perform Umrah and Hajj. The Kaaba is the qibla — the direction Muslims face during their five daily prayers — making Makkah the spiritual focal point of Islam regardless of where a Muslim may be in the world.

Makkah is strictly off-limits to non-Muslims, as decreed by Islamic law and enforced by the Saudi government. The city's entire economy revolves around serving the pilgrims, with vast infrastructure including the world's largest mosque expansion, luxury hotels, and the Haramain High-Speed Railway.

Makkah and the Kaaba

Key Sites & Landmarks

The most important religious and historical sites every pilgrim must know in Makkah.

Most Sacred

Masjid al-Haram (The Grand Mosque)

The largest mosque in the world, surrounding the Kaaba. It can accommodate over 2 million worshippers during Hajj. Contains the Kaaba, Safa & Marwah, Zamzam well, and Maqam Ibrahim.

Sacred

The Kaaba

The most sacred site in Islam. A cube-shaped building at the center of Masjid al-Haram. Muslims around the world face the Kaaba during prayer. It is draped in the Kiswa — a black silk cloth with gold-embroidered Quranic verses.

Pilgrimage Rite

Safa & Marwah

Two small hills inside Masjid al-Haram. Pilgrims walk between them seven times during Sa'i, commemorating Hajar's (Hagar's) search for water for her son Ismail. The path is now a fully enclosed, air-conditioned gallery.

Miraculous

Well of Zamzam

A sacred well located within Masjid al-Haram, believed to have been revealed to Hajar and Ismail by Allah. Zamzam water is freely distributed throughout the mosque and pilgrims bring it home as a blessing.

Historic

Mount Arafat (Jabal al-Rahmah)

The site where the Prophet (PBUH) delivered his Farewell Sermon. Standing at Arafat on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah is the most essential rite of Hajj. It is located about 20 km from Makkah's center.

Spiritual

Jabal al-Nour (Mountain of Light)

The mountain containing the Cave of Hira, where the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) received the first Quranic revelation from Angel Jibreel. A steep 1-2 hour hike that many pilgrims undertake.
