City of the Prophet

Madinah

The luminous city where the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) found refuge, built the first mosque, and rests in eternal peace.

About Madinah

Madinah (officially Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah — "The Enlightened City") is the second holiest city in Islam after Makkah. It is here that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) migrated from Makkah in 622 CE — an event known as the Hijrah, which marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar.

Madinah is home to Al-Masjid an-Nabawi (the Prophet's Mosque), one of the largest mosques in the world. The city holds a special place in every Muslim's heart, and millions of pilgrims visit Madinah before or after completing their Umrah or Hajj.

Unlike Makkah, which is restricted to Muslims only, Madinah welcomes visitors of all faiths to its surrounding areas, though entry to the central mosque area is reserved for Muslims. The city is known for its dates, its peaceful atmosphere, and the profound spiritual tranquility that pilgrims experience here.

Key Sites & Landmarks

The most important religious and historical sites every pilgrim should know about in Madinah.

Must Visit

Al-Masjid an-Nabawi (The Prophet's Mosque)

The mosque built by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself. It contains his tomb, the Rawdah (a garden of Paradise), and can hold over 1 million worshippers. Praying here is 1,000 times more rewarding than in any other mosque except Masjid al-Haram.

Historic

Quba Mosque

The first mosque ever built in Islam. The Prophet (PBUH) laid its foundation stones upon arriving in Madinah. Praying 2 rak'ahs here earns the reward of one Umrah, making it a must-visit for every pilgrim.

Sacred

Jannat al-Baqi (Al-Baqi Cemetery)

The oldest and most significant Islamic cemetery, located adjacent to Al-Masjid an-Nabawi. Many of the Prophet's family members, companions, and scholars are buried here. Pilgrims visit to pay respects.

Historic Mosque

Masjid al-Qiblatain

The "Mosque of the Two Qiblas" — this is where the Prophet (PBUH) received the revelation to change the direction of prayer from Jerusalem to Makkah. A historically significant and unique mosque in Islam.

Battle Site

Mount Uhud

The site of the famous Battle of Uhud (3 AH / 625 CE). The Prophet (PBUH) said about Uhud: "This mountain loves us and we love it." Pilgrims visit the martyrs' graves at its base.

Landmark

The Seven Mosques (Sab'a Masajid)

A complex of seven small mosques near the site of the Battle of the Trench (Khandaq). They mark the positions where the Prophet (PBUH) and his companions prayed during the battle.
