Al Ula

Ancient desert wonders, breathtaking Nabataean tombs, and landscapes shaped by 200,000 years of human history — Saudi Arabia's most extraordinary hidden gem.

About Al Ula

Al Ula is a region in northwestern Saudi Arabia, roughly 300 km northwest of Madinah. It is one of the most significant archaeological and historical sites in the Middle East, home to the ancient Nabataean city of Hegra (also known as Madain Saleh or Al-Hijr) — Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site.

For over 200,000 years, Al Ula has been a crossroads of civilizations. The Dadanite and Lihyanite kingdoms flourished here in the 1st millennium BCE. The Nabataeans — the same people who built Petra in Jordan — established their southern capital at Hegra, carving magnificent rock-cut tombs into the golden sandstone cliffs.

Today, Al Ula is being developed as a major global tourism destination under theSaudi Vision 2030 initiative. The Royal Commission for Al Ula (RCU) is preserving its heritage while creating world-class visitor experiences including luxury resorts, art installations, and the spectacular Maraya — the world's largest mirrored building.

Hegra (Madain Saleh / Al-Hijr)

Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site (2008). Features 111 monumental rock-cut Nabataean tombs with elaborately carved facades dating from the 1st century BCE to 1st century CE. Often called "Petra's sister city."

Natural Wonder

Elephant Rock (Jabal Al-Fil)

A spectacular 52-meter-tall sandstone rock formation shaped like an elephant, created by millions of years of wind and water erosion. One of Al Ula's most iconic and photographed landmarks.

Ancient City

Dadan (Old Town & Tombs)

The remains of the ancient Dadanite and Lihyanite kingdoms (6th-2nd century BCE). Features rock-cut lion tombs carved into cliffs — funeral monuments of the kingdom's elite. One of the Arabian Peninsula's most important pre-Islamic sites.

Inscriptions

Jabal Ikmah (Open-Air Library)

A canyon covered with thousands of ancient inscriptions in multiple scripts (Dadanitic, Nabataean, Aramaic, and early Arabic). Called an "open-air library" — one of the most significant epigraphic sites in the ancient world.

Architecture

Maraya (Mirror Building)

The world's largest mirrored building, holding a Guinness World Record. Maraya ("mirror" in Arabic) is a concert venue and cultural center that reflects the surrounding desert landscape in its walls. Stunning at sunset.

Valley

Al Ula Old Town

An abandoned mud-brick town inhabited until the 1980s, now being restored. Located in a narrow valley with towering sandstone cliffs on both sides. A living record of traditional Saudi architecture and community life.
