Definition:
Umrah Badal [also known as Badal Umrah, Umra Badal in Urdu, Proxy Umrah, etc.] is when someone gets an Umrah performed on his or her behalf by another person. ‘Umrah Badal may be performed for another due to an ongoing illness for which there is no hope of a cure, or because of old age, or because the person has already passed away.
Ruling:
Permissible to perform according to all four major schools of thought / madhab. ‘Umrah Badals should be performed as many times as possible for a person.
Proof of Permissibility of Umrah Badal
Umrah Badal is permissible in Islam, and its validity is proven through authentic Hadith and the understanding of Islamic scholars.
Hadith Evidence
A man once came to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and said:
“O Messenger of Allah, my father is very old and cannot perform Hajj or Umrah.” The Prophet ﷺ replied: “Perform Hajj and Umrah on behalf of your father.” (Reported in Abu Dawood and Tirmidhi)
This Hadith clearly proves that Umrah can be performed on behalf of someone else who is unable to do it themselves.
Are There Any Conditions?
Yes, Umrah Badal has specific rules based on Islamic teachings:
Condition #1 – You Must Perform Your Own Umrah First
Before performing Umrah on someone else’s behalf, you must first complete your own Umrah. Only after your own Umrah is complete can you perform Umrah Badal.
This is established by the practice of the Prophet ﷺ and the early scholars.
Condition #2 – Niyyah (Intention) Must Be Clear
The intention for Umrah Badal must be made at the time of entering Ihram, and should specifically mention that it is on behalf of someone else.
Example intention:
“O Allah, I am performing Umrah on behalf of [name of the person].”
Your intention must be sincere and from the heart.

Receive your video proofs
You will receive three personalized videos showcasing the key stages of the Umrah: the Miqat (where the Ihram is assumed), the Tawaf (circumambulation of the Kaaba), and the Sa’i (the walk between Safa and Marwa).
